After stress and depression, Anders can look forward again
A well-structured Sustainable employees program at
Euro Accident played a crucial role in helping IT consultant Anders (not his real name) turn a challenging period of sick leave and psychiatric hospitalization into a closed chapter in his life.
"They created a safety net for me, which I still find comfort in today" Anders shares in this article about his journey from the first symptoms to full recovery.
From the outside, life seemed to be going perfectly for Anders. He had a good job, had just bought a new house, and was expecting a new addition to his family—a baby boy was on the way.
But reality was different. He felt overwhelmed by pressure both at work and at home. That pressure led to stress and depression, resulting in sick leave and eventually hospitalization in an open psychiatric ward.
"Everything came to a head just before my son was born. I had a major project at work that I had to complete before going on parental leave, while also working hard at home to get our new house ready" Anders explains.
Despite the stress, his son's birth brought a brief moment of relief: "We had a wonderful stay at the hospital, where we were well cared for. Even though having a newborn is exhausting, I felt like I had a break from everything for a while."
Unfortunately, that break was short-lived. Soon after, Anders realized that he wasn’t feeling the happiness he expected. Instead, he felt deep sadness, intrusive negative thoughts, and found even the simplest tasks, like emptying the dishwasher, overwhelming.
"I knew something was wrong, and I tried to act on it. I talked to my wife and, through my health insurance with
Euro Accident, quickly got an appointment with a psychologist. But it was too late to turn things around, and when my parental leave was coming to an end, my world just collapsed" Anders recalls.
A turning point: support and financial security
Anders was hospitalized in an open psychiatric ward, where he received the help and rest he needed to return home to his family. While this was a step in the right direction, he now faced new challenges related to his illness and sick leave. This is where Euro Accident’s Sustainable employees team became a vital support system.
"Euro Accident was aware of my situation and reached out to me shortly after my discharge. They offered me psychological treatment and helped me apply for my Loss of Earning Capacity Insurance, which I also had through
Euro Accident" says Anders.
During his sick leave, Anders received sick pay benefits, but the Loss of Earning Capacity Insurance covered the difference between that and his full salary.
"With two small children and a new house, having financial security cannot be underestimated. Euro Accident created a safety net that I still find reassuring today" he explains.
Personalized care from Sustainable employees
From the moment Anders first contacted Euro Accident to use his health insurance, the Sustainable employees team took note of his case. Recognizing the risk of a severe and prolonged illness, they took proactive steps to provide targeted support.
Sustainable employees is Euro Accident’s specialized insurance concept, working across different types of insurance to ensure holistic support. The team consists of health professionals dedicated solely to customers’ health and well-being. They assess, guide, implement, and tailor health-focused programs for each individual.
In Anders’ case, the public psychiatric healthcare system was the right place to start his treatment. However, based on their expertise, the team knew that this alone would not be enough. Anders would need additional support when public services began scaling back their assistance.
Sustainable employees contacted Anders to inform him about the support and treatment options available. Once the public healthcare services reduced their involvement,
Euro Accident stepped in to provide additional psychological treatment at the right time.
Through Sustainable employees, Anders received individual therapy and a group treatment program designed to help him regain balance in his life.
"The program included group sessions, one-on-one conversations, and practical exercises like mindfulness, forest walks, and techniques for managing my thoughts. I became more aware of my thought patterns and learned to decide when to engage with them and when to let them go" Anders shares.
Sustainable employees also helped coordinate communication between the job center and his psychologist, ensuring that all aspects of his recovery were aligned.
"I had a dedicated contact person at Euro Accident who regularly checked in on me and followed up on my progress. They also took care of the coordination between the Job Center and my psychologist, which I really appreciated. It allowed me to focus on what truly mattered—getting better" he says.
A fresh start: ready for a new job
After 120 days of sick leave, Anders was dismissed from his job, which also meant losing his insurance with Euro Accident. However, the Sustainable employees team found a solution.
"Euro Accident helped me transition to a private insurance plan, so I could continue my coverage. That also meant that I could transfer the terms of my existing Loss of Earning Capacity Insurance once I found a new job."
Following his successful recovery, Anders is now fully recovered and ready for a new job opportunity.
"I’ve come out on the other side and feel good again. I’m confident that I’ll find a new job soon."
