The six gems within the workplace environment
The National Research Centre for the Working Environment has identified “the six key principles” that are essential for creating a healthy psychological work environment. While workplace well-being is a shared responsibility, as a leader, you play a central role in fostering and maintaining it.
There are many ways to strengthen the work environment. You may already be doing well in some areas, while others could benefit from further attention.
Influence
Influence refers to the ability to have a say in work tasks, working hours, remote work, collaboration partners, planning, and execution of tasks, as well as the ability to contribute to important decisions.
A sense of purpose
A sense of purpose at work comes from feeling that our tasks are meaningful and that we can see how our contributions align with the overall goals and create value.
Rewards
Beyond salary, rewards include feedback and recognition, as well as ensuring a fair connection between effort and compensation.
Social Support
A positive work environment is built on strong relationships, support, and encouragement from both leaders and colleagues. It is important to show interest and care for each other and to trust that help will be available when needed.
Work Demands
There must be a balance between job demands and the resources available to meet them. Expectations should be clear and well-defined. Employees should have enough time for their tasks and a shared understanding of when a job is considered well done.
Work Demands
Predictability in work helps reduce uncertainty and insecurity. Having a degree of control over tasks, knowing what to expect in the future, and receiving relevant information in a timely manner all contribute to a stable and supportive work environment.
